Mahashivratri

Hindus around the world celebrate Mahashivatri this week on Thursday, February 27th, 2014 – The Great Night of Lord Shiva. Devoted Hindus will visit their local temple to observe this holiday and pray to Lord Shiva on his favorite day. Women devotees will fast and offer prayers both to Lord Shiva and Parvati for a long, healthy and happy life and marriage.

In the early morning, devotees visit temples to offer cold water, milk and bael leaves on the Lingam, a symbol for the worship of Lord Shiva, after properly cleaning it. Festivals continue throughout the week especially in India and Nepal. Temples are decorated in lights and colorful decorations.
